October 5 – 26, 2013
Opening reception: October 5 (Art for Art’s Sake), 6 – 9 pm
Also on exhibit during the month of October, Octavia Art Gallery is pleased to present the architectural, glass works of Laurel Porcari.
Porcari’s work reflects geography and mapping as well as physicality and boundaries. Both abstract and concrete ideas are translated in her work, and her fusion of design and drawing utilize her education and previous career as an architect.
In this body of work, Porcari layers thousands of glass strips and powdered glass to build up complex images in fused glass. Her attention to detail is total and, as with a pointillist painter, each part contributes to the whole.
Porcari lives and works in New Orleans, and she received her education and formal training from the Pratt Institute, Columbia University, and Tulane University. Her large-scale glass works are permanently installed in locations both locally and nationally, including St. Katherine Drexel Chapel at Xavier University, Children’s Hospital, Hibernia Bank, and Phelps Dunbar.
